Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC), a 266-bed hospital of the Peninsula Regional Health System in Salisbury, MD, was today recognized with 37 clinical achievements for the care it provides to patients across cardiac, orthopedic, neurosciences, pulmonary, vascular, prostate surgery, gastrointestinal, critical care, labor and delivery and bariatric service lines in a national study by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data, and outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states.

The recognitions include eight Healthgrades Excellence Awards for being in the Top 5% or 10% of every United States hospital surveyed. PRMC achieved:

Top 5% in the Nation for Pulmonary Care

Top 5% in the Nation for Gastrointestinal Care

Top 10% in the Nation for General Surgery

Top 10% in the Nation in Vascular Surgery

Top 10% in the Nation for Prostate Surgery

Top 10% in the Nation for Critical Care

Top 10% in the Nation for Orthopedics

Top 10% in the Nation for Neurosciences

Peninsula Regional Medical Center also received national recognition from Healthgrades as being one of the Best 50 or Best 100 hospitals in all of the United States for care and outcomes. Peninsula Regional is the only recipient on the Delmarva Peninsula to be:

  • One of America's 50 Best Hospitals for Vascular Surgery (6 years in a row/2015-2020)
  • One of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Prostate Surgery (3 years in a row/2018-2020)
  • One of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Gastrointestinal Care
  • One of America's 100 Best Hospitals for General Surgery

Additionally, PRMC received 22 5-Star ratings across all nine services reviewed. That signifies those are performing better than expected when compared to the nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide surveyed by Healthgrades in 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. Many of the 5-Star ratings have been achieved in multiple consecutive years at PRMC.

"As consumers navigate their health, it is important to consider a number of factors, including hospital quality, before deciding where to access care," said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. "The Healthgrades America's 50/100 Best Hospitals for vascular surgery, prostate surgery and stroke care recognizes those hospitals that have proven their dedication to quality care and exceptional outcomes over time and we applaud their efforts and achievement."

Also of note in the 2019 Healthgrades clinical achievement review is PRMC's recognition for 14 consecutive years with a 5-Star ranking for the treatment of pneumonia, and 10 consecutive years at 5 Stars for the performance of carotid procedures.

Peninsula Regional also holds the Healthgrades 2019 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, placing it in the Top 5% of all United States hospitals for the overall care provided to its patients. It is the only hospital on Delmarva to receive that honor, and one of just nine in Maryland. The 2020 Distinguished Hospital Award recipients will be announced in February of next year.

"Peninsula Regional's greatest asset is our team of employees, medical staff, and volunteers. Our Healthgrades clinical successes are a direct result of their dedication and devotion to every patient and family member," said Steven Leonard, Ph.D., MBA, FACHE, President/CEO of the Peninsula Regional Health System and Peninsula Regional Medical Center. "Quality and safety remain at the heart of everything we do as an organization. To be placed among the nation's best hospitals, once again, by Healthgrades reinforces that we have assembled the finest healthcare team in the region that is committed to outstanding clinical outcomes and quality patient care."

PRMC, when compared to the other 4,500 American hospitals surveyed, is performing at or above the national average by receiving either 3 Stars or 5 Stars across all service lines measured by Healthgrades for the quality of care patients receive and the outcomes they experience. No 1-Star rankings were noted.

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital's quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality.

Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
