Always place babies on their backs to sleep, and ensure that their sleep space is uncluttered with soft toys, blankets or crib bumpers.

Crib bumpers are now banned from sale in Maryland - you can't buy them in Maryland stores, nor can sellers ship them to Maryland from out of state. Why did Maryland ban this longtime nursery fixture? The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has a story here, but long story short - they were much more likely to cause harm than good. Young babies can suffocate when the padded bumpers impede their breathing, and older babies can use them to stand on and fall out of the crib. If you have bumpers installed in your baby's crib, please consider discarding them for your child's safety. For more tips on safe sleeping, click here for a printable brochure.
