Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute has been saving lives for more than 50 years. The approach, technology and expertise at cannot be matched. If you or someone you love is facing a cancer diagnosis, there’s no need to travel hours for treatment.

Here’s why you should think twice before traveling over the bridge for care:

The Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute has been leading cancer care on the Shore for more than 50 years.
Cancer is a complex disease affecting the body in many different ways, and the best treatment can vary from person to person. That’s why it’s important to have personalized, specialized care for each individual patient. The Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute has been leading the fight against cancer for more than 50 years. No other facility on the Shore has the technology, expertise or compassion.

The Institute has been dedicated to its beach communities for more than two decades.
Peninsula Regional Medical Center has been offering medical oncology in Worcester County at its Franklin Avenue location in Berlin, Md., for more than 20 years and aims to enhance its services by offering comprehensive cancer care at the Delmarva Health Pavilion Ocean Pines.

It offers convenient care, close to home.
Treatments with radiation therapy and chemotherapy often require frequent visits. Radiation therapy typically only takes a few minutes, but it is usually performed five days a week. For many patients, there is often a lengthy drive to receive treatment, and this can span over six to eight weeks in many cases. Now, thanks to the construction of the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute Ocean Pines, beach-area residents can find care in their own backyard. Now, patients who live near the beach can access the same quality services with information housed in a single electronic medical record available for everyone involved in your care.

The team approach to care gives each patient the best chance in the fight against cancer.
The Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute’s multidisciplinary team approach is the backbone giving the program its strength. Teams of physicians from various specialties such as radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgery, clinical research, radiology, and pathology come together to review each case and collaborate on the best treatment plan for each patient. The team approach is unique to the Shore.

The Institute boasts state-of-the-art technology and world-renowned doctors.
The Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute offers the only robotic surgery program on the Lower Shore, with smaller incisions and faster recovery times, and is home to a Varian TrueBeam® linear accelerator, which offers high-precision radiation therapy in targeting tumors while protecting healthy tissue. Patients also have access to the most experienced surgeons in the area, which prevents them from traveling long distances for state-of-the-art surgical care.

Patients have access to revolutionary clinical trials.
As the Eastern Shore’s only accredited comprehensive community cancer program, the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute is the exclusive place in our region to access clinical trials through the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network. The Institute’s clinical research team also assists in enrolling and following patients in National Cancer Institute (NCI) and pharmaceutical-sponsored studies.

Promising new treatments are being explored.
The new Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute Ocean Pines will also accommodate our patients undergoing immunotherapy, perhaps one of the most promising new cancer treatments of this century. Immunotherapy is a cancer treatment designed to boost the body’s natural defenses to fight the cancer by improving or restoring immune system function.

Support is provided to patients and their families.
The Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute’s care continues into survivorship, with survivors welcomed into support groups as well as exercise and cooking classes offered through Cancer Support Services. The programs are free, along with support from clinical social workers and nurse navigators. This team helps ensure cancer patients and their families have access to the resources and support they need.

The Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute has high standards and because of this hasearned accreditation with commendation from The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons.
To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet or exceed 34 quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.
