Please join the Respiratory Care Department as we celebrate Respiratory Care Week.  Since founded in 1968 by two Registered Nurses and referred to as the Inhalation Therapy Department, the Respiratory Care Department has grown to more than 64 Therapists.  We provide 24 hour overage to the ED, ICU/CTICU/PCU, Med-Surg, L&D/NICU, virtually every area of the medical center. We have come a long way, since the piston driven ventilators, Ultrasonic Nebulizers, Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing apparatus and Chest Physiotherapy machines of the 1970’s to touch screen microprocessor ventilators and Pneumatic Chest Physiotherapy devices with CPEP and CHFO.  All of these modalities plus the talents of our Respiratory Therapists will help us continue to provide the best care available to the residents of the communities PRMC services. The first staff members were required to have one year of college and participate in a 20 week on the job training program.  Now our candidates come to us from colleges and universities and hold associates, bachelors and masters degrees.  Our department enjoys a clinical relationship with Delaware Technical and Community College and Salisbury University where many of their instructors are also members of our department.   Now a standard in many facilities, PRMC was among the first to allow Respiratory Therapists to intubate, insert arterial lines, assist during high risk deliveries, perform respiratory assessments and manage therapy under the direction of a physician.  In the 40 plus years since the department’s beginning, we have come a long way, provided many services and touched many lives. Please help us celebrate this week as we continue to lead the way.
