Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) was awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The designation recognizes PRMC’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer healthcare. This is the second consecutive reporting period that Peninsula Regional has been given the A grade, having received the same acknowledgement in the organization’s Fall 2018 report.  PRMC was one of just 10 Maryland hospitals to earn an ‘A’ and the only hospital on the Delmarva Peninsula to be honored in the Spring 2019 report.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

“Safety is foremost for all healthcare providers.  Achieving an ‘A’ rating, and then retaining that for a second consecutive year, only happens because a team is dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach involving both clinical and non-clinical partners focused on improving processes to enhance exceptional care and safety,” said Steve Leonard, MBA, FACHE, President/CEO of the Peninsula Regional Health System and Peninsula Regional Medical Center.  “In addition to our providers and nurses, there are always key contributors like the pharmacy staff who provided input and leadership into reducing infections and our information technology team that was crucial to our CPOE successes.”

Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

“To be recognized nationally as an ‘A’ hospital is an accomplishment the whole community should take pride in,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ grade are making it a priority to protect patients from preventable medical harm and error. We congratulate hospital leaders, board members, staff, volunteers and clinicians who work so hard to earn this A.”

Peninsula Regional Medical Center is also the proud recipient of the Healthgrades America’s 250 BEST Hospitals award for 2019, placing it among the Top 5% of all U.S. hospitals for care and outcomes.  It has also received a 2019 5-Star recognition from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the highest patient care honor that organization can provide.  Both are exclusive to PRMC on the Delmarva Peninsula.
