May 2012 Classes and Events at Peninsula Regional Medical Center
May 1
Stroke Support Group. Free. 1-3 p.m. Hallowell Conference Center, Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. A special Stroke Month meeting will bring a panel of guests to the May meeting, including a neurosurgeon, neurologist, physiatrist and hospitalist. Register by calling 410-677-6660.

May 7
Prepared Childbirth Class. 6-9 p.m. $75. Avery W. Hall Educational Center, Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. Meet other expectant parents at this interactive course that meets on four Mondays. It includes information about prenatal care, labor and delivery, post-partum care and infant safety. Classes should be taken during the sixth to eighth month of pregnancy. The fee is $75 for the mom to be and her coach. Pre-registration is required. Participants are asked to bring a blanket and two pillows to each class. Call 410-543-7126 or register online in the Classes and Events section of www.peninsula.org.

Better Breathers Club. 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Free. Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. A monthly support group for adults who suffer from asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, lung cancer and other respiratory problems. Call 410-543-7268 for more information or to register for a meeting.

Kids and Teens Diabetes Support Group. 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Free Avery W. Hall Educational Center Auditorium, Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. The topic this month will be “Diabetes and the Family: Making it Work for Everyone,” with speaker Mary Ellen Meyer, RN, MPH, CDE. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Vascular Screenings. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free. Peninsula Regional Medical Center Vascular Lab. Free screenings for people age 55 and older will include testing for carotid artery blockage, peripheral artery disease and abdominal aortic aneurysm. The screening will be offered to individuals who exhibit at least three prominent risk factors or one symptom. Pre-registration is required. Call 410-543-7123 to find out if you qualify.

Whether you, a family member or friend has diabetes, this support group, featuring presentations on how to manage and live with diabetes, can help. The Peninsula Regional Diabetes Education Program is a five-week series of classes taught by nurses, dietitians and Certified Diabetes Educators. A physician’s referral will be obtained in order to attend classes. Set goals to improve your diabetes management and learn strategies for a healthier lifestyle. Classes for this session will be held for five weeks, each Wednesday, through June 13. To register, call 410-543-7061.

EMS Stroke Conference. 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Free. Hallowell Conference Center, Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. Please bring your MIEMSS identification card with you to this stroke education conference for pre-hospital providers. ALS providers will be awarded with four Category A continuing education hours, and BLS providers will be awarded four Category M continuing education hours.
