Peninsula Regional Earns BlueCross BlueShield Blue Distinction in Cardiac Care

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield recently designated Peninsula Regional Medical Center of Salisbury, Maryland as a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care.

This most recent designation now creates Blue Distinction Centers at Peninsula Regional for Cardiac Care, Bariatric Surgery, Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery and Spine Surgery. Peninsula Regional is currently the only hospital or medical center on the Delmarva Peninsula to hold Blue Distinction Center recognition in each of those specialties.

Peninsula Regional joins an elite group of just nine of Maryland’s 59 hospitals to earn the distinction in Cardiac Care, and becomes the first hospital or medical center on the Delmarva Peninsula to be named a Cardiac Care Blue Distinction Center. Blue Distinction is a designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality, safe health care with low complication and mortality rates, and a comprehensive quality management program. The Blue Designation exemplifies the quality cardiovascular service line provided by the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

“What this means to our community and the Delmarva region is that this comprehensive program, with depth of services and clinical experience, has met national quality indicators as set forth by the Society of Thoracic Surgery and the American College of Cardiology,” said Jeanne Ruff, Executive Director of the Guerrieri Heart and Vascular Institute. “Insurance companies expect quality outcomes for their members and earning this designation ensures that the care received at Peninsula Regional Medical Center is unmatched by others. Our physicians and clinical staff are at the ‘heart’ of this award; working endless hours to ensure the best care is given to our patients.”

Peninsula Regional and its Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute team offer comprehensive cardiac and vascular care services including: inpatient cardiac and vascular care, Maryland’s most comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program, the Eastern Shore’s only electrophysiology services for treatment of irregular heart beats, cardiac catheterization and cardiac and vascular surgery (including coronary artery bypass graft surgery).

“We believe this cardiac designation will serve as a catalyst, driving strong programs like ours to become even better,” stated Dr. Peggy Naleppa, President/CEO. “Over 500 patients undergo open heart bypass surgery each year in our Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute. Five thousand others rely on our heart team for additional cardiac or vascular procedures. Our surgeons pioneered open heart surgery in this region in 1974 and have since performed over 12,000 bypass surgeries. Our cardiologists and electrophysiologists have conducted nearly 270,000 other heart procedures in the same 36 year period. Those volumes and that experience are both unmatched in our region.”

Blue Distinction Center designations provide consumers with a framework for making informed decisions on where to go for specialty care. “Blue Distinction puts a high value on research and evidence-based health and medical information,” says Allan Korn, MD, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Chief Medical Officer. “Blue Distinction Centers, like Peninsula Regional, are institutions that meet clinically validated quality standards and deliver better overall outcomes in patient care.”

At 358 acute care beds, 30 transitional care beds and 28 newborn beds, Peninsula Regional is the region’s largest, most advanced tertiary care facility, and has been meeting the health care needs of Delmarva Peninsula residents since 1897. Its 3,300 physicians, staff and volunteers provide safe, compassionate and affordable care designed to exceed the expectations of the nearly 500,000 patients who rely on the Medical Center team each year for inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, subacute and emergency/trauma services. At 113 years, it is the region’s oldest health care institution with the most experienced team of health care professionals.

Note: Designation as Blue Distinction Centers means these facilities' overall experience and aggregate data met objective criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians' and leading professional organizations’ recommendations. Individual outcomes may vary. To find out which services are covered under your policy at any facilities, please contact your local Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield plan.
