The Breast Center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center is proud to announce it has been granted a three year full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.  The Breast Center is one of only seven in Maryland and the only facility on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware to receive this accreditation.  Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

During the survey process, the Breast Center at Peninsula Regional demonstrated compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease.  These standards include proficiency in the areas of: leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.  Achieving NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated that the Breast Center a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

We are very proud to have received this accreditation from the NAPBC," said David Walker, MD, Medical Director of the Breast Center at Peninsula Regional.  "It shows our dedication to providing the highest quality of care and it reinforces to our patients that receiving care at our accredited center ensures they will have access to advanced medicine, comprehensive services and compassionate care, close to home."

Our Staff
The Breast Center staff consists of highly skilled professionals dedicated to providing the best in breast care. The mammographers are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and attend educational seminars to stay current with the latest technology and techniques in breast care.

A board-certified radiologist interprets your mammogram and a breast health navigator serves as a consultant to provide you the answers to questions that you may have.  The breast health navigator will provide a professional explanation of results and coordinate an appropriate plan of care that is sensitive to your needs.

Early Detection and Prevention
The Breast Center offers routine screening mammograms using Full Field Digital Mammography technology to detect early cancer.  This technology provides more comprehensive visibility to the radiologist.  The technologist has the capability of viewing the patient's images within seconds on a special computer allowing a much quicker and more efficient exam.  This new technology also uses less radiation than conventional mammography systems.

The Full Field Digital Mammography system still offers CAD, Computer Aided Detection, a computerized system that "double checks" the mammography images and assists the radiologist in detecting hard-to-find abnormalities that might otherwise go undetected. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics demonstrate that one woman in eight will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman's survival, and if detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97%.
