Peninsula Regional Medical Center, through the work of its Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Center team, has become the first hospital or medical center in Maryland, Delaware or Washington, DC to earn The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval, Disease-Specific Care Certification in Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement Surgery, and at the time of the certification was just the 63rd hospital or medical center in the United States to hold this prestigious honor. "We and our patients are fortunate to have a very skilled and highly engaged surgical, nursing and rehabilitative team that is dedicated to orthopaedics and extremely interested in continuously improving a patient's clinical experience, from pre-operative teaching to individualized post surgical recovery plans," said Alan Newberry, Peninsula Regional's CEO.
To earn the certification, Peninsula Regional had to undergo an extensive on-site survey by The Joint Commission, evaluating the Medical Center's Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Center against stringent Joint Commission quality and safety standards. Those processes included patient care, education, clinical practice guidelines (prescribed, tested and successful methods of treatment) and surgical outcomes.
For the third consecutive year, HealthGrades, Inc., the nation's leading health care quality rating service, named Peninsula Regional Medical center #1 in Maryland for Overall Orthopaedic Care in 2009.
Recovery is motivated through preparation, education, continuity of care and a pre-planned discharge. Our patients and their families are encouraged to attend a pre-operative educational session designed to inform the patient of what to expect before, during and after surgery. Our goal is to involve the patient and their families in the patient's treatment through every step of the program.
From a clinical perspective, patients benefit from a standardized clinical order pathway and routines designed to improve efficiency. Patients are treated to many amenities including large and private rooms, a unit based rehabilitation gym and a complimentary gift to remind them of their life-enhancing experience.
The Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Services team has set the standard for orthopaedic and rehabilitative care and pain management.
This trend setting service has also offered our patients the opportunity to experience a series of regional orthopaedic "firsts" including cartilage replacement service, minimally invasive and small incision hip and knee replacements, 2 incision hip replacement and ceramic hip replacement.
