A team of board-certified neonatologists, ophthalmologists, clinical nurse specialists, neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, physical, speech and occupational therapists and social workers provide comprehensive care for premature newborns at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Through a collaboration with Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., a neonatologist is available 24 hours a day for consultation with obstetricians and pediatricians throughout the Delmarva Peninsula.
The Special Care Nursery combines state-of-the-art technology and experienced caregiving in a developmentally supportive and nurturing environment for the newborns and their families. Through our affiliation with Children's National, our Special Care Nursery is able to bring pediatric cardiology specialists to a newborn's bedside via tele-medicine.
Within minutes of ordering an echocardiogram, our team at Children's National can connect via a tele-medicine system. Through a desktop computer and high bandwidth telephone connection, physicians at Children's National watch the echocardiogram live, in real time, as a sonographer performs the study.
During the tele-medicine encounter, a Children's National pediatric cardiologist guides the sonographer through the study. The cardiologist provides immediate feedback to the neonatologist during the teleconference and can also communicate directly with the parents of the baby.
