Peninsula Regional Medical Center - Part of Peninusula Regional Health System
Cardiothoracic Surgery

Traditionally, heart surgery has been performed through a median sternotomy (an open procedure dividing the breast bone).  Now with the use of an advanced surgical robot at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, the da Vinci Surgical System Robot,  several heart procedures can be performed through minimally invasive incisions.

This device allows three dimensional visualization and remarkable precision which gives surgeons the ability to perform difficult operations with greater accuracy.

Minimally invasive cardiac procedures include mitral valve replacement and repair, off-pump coronary bypass grafts, and surgery for atrial fibrillation.

Benefits of minimally invasive surgery include a shorter hospital stay, decreased post-operative pain, and improved cosmetic results.
