The Peninsula Institute for Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery (PILARS) was developed by the laparoscopic and robotic surgeons at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland to empower Delmarva Peninsula patients through education and to maintain outcomes excellence through research.   Our mission is to be the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the region's premier minimally invasive surgery provider, committed to the continuous adoption of proven technology and to patient-centered quality improvement.

Currently, our surgeons perform 40 different types of procedures using minimally invasive or robotic techniques-1,500 of these surgeries annually-and we're adding more surgeons, specialties and procedures each year.  Laparoscopic and Robotic procedures use smaller incisions, are less painful and result in a faster return to work and normal activity compared to open surgery.  The enhanced visualization that is achieved during these minimally invasive techniques also promotes surgical precision which leads to improved long term outcomes. 

PILARS surgeons participate in a surgical outcomes database that records all information associated with each laparoscopic and robotic procedure performed at the Medical Center.  Some of the measures include: medical history, pre-operative laboratory values, operative and post-operative events and the costs associated with each procedure.  Tracking this information and regularly trying to improve the numbers we are seeing is also known as continuous quality improvement and the reason we've created the Peninsula Institute for Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery.
