“To be placed among the nation’s best hospitals, once again, by an organization as respected as HealthGrades is extremely gratifying for the entire Medical Center,” stated Peggy Naleppa, Peninsula Regional Medical Center President. “It reinforces for us and our patients alike that we have assembled the finest health care team of physicians, staff and volunteers in the region who are committed to outstanding clinical outcomes and quality patient care.”
According to the twelfth annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America study top-rated hospitals had a 52 percent lower mortality rate than the U.S. national average when looking at the patient outcomes of 17 procedures and diagnoses ranging from bypass surgery to treatment for heart attack. When the top-rated hospitals were compared to the poorest performers, there was an even greater difference, 72 percent lower mortality.
While the countries inhospital risk-adjusted mortality rate improved on average of 10.99% from 2006 to 2009, the nation’s best-performing hospitals were able to reduce preventable deaths at a much faster rate than poor-performing hospitals, resulting in large state, regional and hospital-to-hospital variations in the quality of patient care, the study found.
The new 2010 HealthGrades hospital ratings were posted today at www.healthgrades.com.
