Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) is an effective technology that supplements other treatment methods used by physicians. During HBO you lie comfortably within a pressurized chamber for approximately 2 hours. During this time you may listen to music, watch TV or movies. Treatments are typically offered Monday through Friday for 4-6 weeks. During this time you are monitored by a physician and staff at all times. Indications for HBO include, but are not limited to: - Diabetic wounds of the lower extremity - Wounds that have not healed for several weeks - Post-radiation tissue injury - Arterial insufficiency ulcers - Wounds caused by poor circulation or trauma - Compromised skin grafts or flaps - Chronic refractory osteomyelitis (Bone infection)
The Peninsula Wound Center offers the largest monoplace hyperbaric chamber available on the Delmarva Peninsula, the Perry Sigma plus. At 40 inches in diameter, most patients can sit upright during their treatment.
Preparing for HBO
Smoking During your HBO treatments, you are urged to quit smoking. Smoking reduces the effectiveness of the HBO treatments because it causes your blood vessels to shrink. This limits the amount of blood your body can get to your wound.
Medicine Unless advised by your physician, you should continue to take your medication as prescribed. If you have any questions, you may always ask any of our team members.
Food You may continue to eat and snack as normal.
If you feel ill If you feel ill or funny at any time let your clinician know immediately. The HBO physician will make a determination if you should come in for treatment or not.
